Massive IT Outage Disrupts Global Air Travel

Airlines Scramble as Flights Canceled, Passengers Stranded

Ultra-Low Cost Carriers Hit Hard

A massive IT outage caused widespread disruptions in air travel on Friday, with thousands of flights canceled or delayed. Ultra-low cost airlines, including SunCountry, Allegiant Air, Frontier, and Spirit Airlines, were particularly hard hit.

Spirit Airlines reported that its reservation system was impacted by the outage, leaving passengers unable to check in or change flights. As of Friday morning, the airline had asked passengers to check back for updates.

The outage also affected the operations of other major carriers, including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. According to FlightAware, a flight tracking service, nearly 3,000 flights within or into the United States had been canceled by Friday afternoon.

The outage reportedly began in the early hours of Friday morning and was caused by a hardware failure at a major data center. Airlines raced to contain the effects, but it took several hours for systems to be restored.

The disruption caused widespread inconvenience for air passengers around the world. Many travelers were forced to wait for hours at airports or rebook their flights on later dates.

The IT outage is a reminder of the importance of reliable technology in the modern air travel industry. As airlines increasingly rely on digital systems for reservations, check-in, and other operations, even a minor outage can have a major impact.
